Island Fever Sailing School Class Descriptions

Basic Keelboat

You will learn to sail a boat, approximately 30 feet long, in light to moderate winds. This includes learning about the parts of a boat, rigging, and sails, studying wind theory and sail trim as well as safety and federal requirements. 

This is a 2-day, group class held on a weekend from 9-5 both days. You’ll want to bring your lunch so we can maximize our time on the water.

The cost is $600 per person.

Coastal Cruising

Prerequisites: Basic Keelboat Sailing Certification

Students will learn to cruise safely in local and regional waters as both skipper and crew, on an auxiliary powered sailboat of 27 - 34 feet in length in moderate winds and sea conditions.  $425 per person:  Sign-up with a $100 deposit.  The class consists of one day and one evening usually combined with Bareboat Charter. 

Bareboat Charter

Prerequisites:  Basic Keelboat and Coastal Cruising Certification.


 A bareboat charter is when you charter a boat and you are the captain.  This class is extremely helpful for sailors who wish to charter boats to live aboard in the islands.

An advanced cruising standard for individuals with cruising experience.  The individual can act as a skipper or crew of a 30 - 50 foot boat sailing by day in coastal waters.  The standard includes knowledge of boating systems and maintenance procedures.

 
This is a live-aboard class with night sailing and the price includes meals.


$450 per person.  Sign-up with a $100 deposit. 

Coastal Navigation

No prerequisites necessary

You'll learn chart plotting basics, dead reckoning, line of position, bearings, running fixes, danger bearing, current & leeway and how to calculate for tides.


Even in the age of GPS, this basic knowledge is critical for making your way around coastal areas. For those of you considering ASA Advanced Coastal or Celestial Navigation, this class is a prerequisite and it's certainly empowering to know how to read charts.

​The course is $500 including books, DVD, and charts, and is held over a Friday-Sunday.

Coastal Cruising & Bareboat Charter Combo

Prerequisites: Basic Keelboat.

Earn two certifications in one weekend.
This is a live-aboard class taught on Sea Bella, a 34’ O’Day. 

You’ll gain knowledge of boat systems such as the inboard motor, electrical, and plumbing. You’ll study boat handling, seamanship, Navigation, and emergency procedures. 

We will have dinner at anchor, then sail at night practicing man-overboard and mock mooring pickups. This class starts at 1:00 pm on a Friday and ends at 4:30 on Sunday.

The cost is $885 per person and includes meals.
